Reprising his role in the earlier Tony Rome movie of the same name, P.I. Frank Sinatra finds himself this time in the seedy Miami Beach of the 1960’s where the “mob” are gasping their last breaths, and characters larger than life stalk the streets.
The plot’s-not-a lot kind of movie is driven along by Hugo Montenegro’s lively score – a perfect match for what’s happening up there on the screen.
The main theme has often been sampled, and can also be heard on TV documentaries about Miami Beach today.
Filmed on location predominantly in South Florida, its seems to this writer, that Frank Sinatra was very much “at home” here, and one cannot escape the sensation that he managed to get some of his cronies “bit” parts of little or no consequence to the story – such as it is.
Today, the movie stands as kind of “social document” to an era now long (and many would say “good riddance” to) gone. Today’s Beach is unrecognisable!
The album boasts some interesting new notes, by the way.
