Entrance was 1/6p, and membership was 10/=.  Ah, those really were the days!  Ronnie and his co-founder, saxophonist Pete King could never have imagined that that dingy basement at 39 Gerrard Street in London’s Soho would turn into a worldwide phenomenon that became Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.

Famously, the club also ‘did food’, which Ronnie perennially rubished with cynical phrases such as, “A million flies can’t be wrong.”  But the music was the thing. The Club saw the first appearances in Britain in the 60’s of American jazz luminaries such as Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Johnnie Griffin and countless others.  British sax legend, Tubby Hayes was also a regular.  Members of the house band included Stan Tracey.

Few are alive today; the exceptions being sax giant Sonny Rollins, who regularly appears at London's Barbican Hall, and Stan Tracey - former house-band pianist, who continues to make appearances around the world.

Amazingly, Ronnie also did session work, which famously included the solo on The Beatles’ “Lady Madonna”.
